Hello! If you’ve never had Milo before, letalone heard of it, Milo is a chocolate malt powder that mixes with hot milk to make a really yummy chocolatey drink. It was first made by Nestle in 1934 in Australia and is popular in Australia & New Zealand. Milo was created to help children have a yummy drink that added nutrients to their diets. You can also have it cold. As kids, we’d have WAY too much powder, and we’d also sprinkle it on top of the milk.

Milo Ice Cream Recipe

Makes approx 2L. This recipe contains dairy.

Ingredients/What You Will Need

  • Ice cream maker (make sure you put your bowl in the freezer overnight if required)
  • Steel mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • 2L airtight container
  • 600 mL of thickened cream (also known as heavy cream)
  • 1/2 cup of Milo, dissolved in hot water (cooled)
  • 1 cup of full fat milk
  • 3/4 cup of caster sugar
  • 3 tsp vanilla
  • Dash of salt
  • Optional: 2 x Cadbury Flakes

Pro Tip: Place the steel mixing bowl and whisk into the fridge for about an hour prior to using.

Method

  1. Pour thickened cream into a steel bowl and whisk in sugar.
  2. Add in 1 cup of milk, salt, and 3 tsp of vanilla.
  3. Add in cooled Milo mixture.
  4. Cover bowl with glad wrap/cling wrap and chill in the fridge for 1 hour.
  5. Pour mixture into ice cream maker and churn for 25 minutes (or according to ice cream maker. instructions). Optional – once there are about 5 minutes left, add in chopped flakes.
  6. Once churned, you can either serve as soft serve immediately or freeze for 4-5 hours in an airtight container.
  7. Enjoy.

Serving Suggestion: Sprinkle a little Milo powder over the top of the ice cream when serving for that nostalgia childhood feel.

Here are some photos. The one on the right is what it looks like if you were to have it as soft serve.

You could also make this as a no-churn ice cream by using condensed milk instead of full-fat milk and adding in melted chocolate.

Let me know if you make this!
